  1. Kia Ora Scott, this is Shannon from the Summer Learning Journey.

What a thoughtful list of things to bring on an overseas voyage. You’ve considered a lot of factors and put together an inclusive and well-thought out selection. I like that you included things to make a sandwich (bread and salami). I really like peanut butter and jam sandwiches, what’s your favourite type?.

I also like that you included fruit. Fruit is super important when at sea because we need vitamin C to prevent scurvy. Back in the days of pirates and long expeditions at sea, a lot of people would get scurvy. It can make your teeth fall out and you feel really ill which isn’t much fun. To stop this, the captains would make the sailors and pirates eat lemons and oranges and red cabbage. All of these are really packed with vitamin C and would keep the crew healthy and happy.

I also really love oreos so I think I’d want to voyage with you if you were packing the food! I always eat the icing in the middle first before I eat the biscuits. How do you eat your oreos?
